Recovery Paths for Silence and Confusion
ReadingRecovery Paths for Silence and Confusion
No chatbot stays on script all day. People abandon the thread, answer half the question, paste something unexpected, or ask for help the bot cannot safely provide. Recovery design is what makes the system feel usable under real conditions. Without it, the bot repeats itself, loses trust, and sends frustrated users away.
Handle silence deliberately
If the user stops replying, do not send a stream of needy follow-ups. Use one short reminder that adds value, such as offering a simpler choice or a clear next action. If there is still no reply, end the sequence cleanly and hand the contact to an appropriate nurture workflow if permission exists.
Handle confusion clearly
- Restate the question in simpler language.
- Offer fixed options if free text failed.
- Acknowledge when the bot may have misunderstood.
- Escalate to a human when accuracy matters more than automation.
Review transcripts for repeated prompts, repeated apologies, and dead-end answers. A good recovery path gives the user a clean route forward and protects the brand when the automated path runs out of value.
